KCTS honors local schools

A science program in Seattle public schools and a robotics program at Lindbergh High School in Renton are among the winners of KCTS-TV's Golden Apple Awards.
Seattle's K-5 Inquiry-Based Science Program has involved 22,500 students and 950 teachers annually in hands-on science investigations since it was launched in 1995 with the help of several corporate and academic partners.
In the Lindbergh High program, students are introduced to principles of science and technology by designing and building increasingly complex robots.
Other Seattle-area winners are Juanita Elementary School music teacher Sandra Droz, who directs school musicals that give each student "a chance to shine"; the "American Ideals" oratory competition at Alderwood Middle School in Lynnwood; and the Bellevue-based Wilderness Technology Alliance, which works with at-risk students from selected schools around the state.
