We have found in our work with students that this transfer of use of manipulatives only occurs when the teacher consistently models in reverse. This means that when students "stumble" while problem solving they provide alternative strategies - including the use of appropriate manipulatives. There are several studies on this idea that clearly shows that transfer is a learned process and does not occur "naturally" in most students. I know this is short but maybe you can locate more info thru ERIC searches on teacvhing and the brain. My favorite sorces are Caine & Caine, and Jensen. There is a book entitled "Teaching With the Brain In Mind" (I think title is correct) that was very helpful to me.
